Sit Still: A Workshop with Tom Bierlein
October 3 @ 1:00 pm - 2:30 pmFree
The public is invited to a special workshop with Belwin Conservancy’s 2021 Artist in Residence, Tom Bierlein. Participants will meet with Tom at Belwin’s Creative Center and discuss his installation, “The Coming Soil,” then enjoy a self-guided walk and time for listening to the natural elements. The workshop also will include a discussion and tasting of mushrooms related to the installation.
Dress for the elements and be prepared to hike through woodland and prairie and on steep hills. Bring a Smart Phone to participate in an artist-led activity.
This event was rescheduled from August 28th.
“The Coming Soil” offers space to witness the simultaneous decomposition and regenerative properties of a fallen tree. Three shou sugi ban cedar walls accentuate the architecture of surrounding oak trees. Within this interior, the fallen aspen tree is a new ecosystem unto itself. Insects, lichen, and fungi all take their part in returning the tree back to the soil.
Limited to 20 participants. RSVP required.
This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
