Cancelled: Unveiling “The Coming Soil”

August 26 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Free

Due to the weather forecast, we have decided to cancel this artist event with Tom Bierlein. We have also cancelled the rain date of Friday, August 27. This event will be rescheduled at a later date.

If you have signed up for Sit Still: A Workshop with Tom Bierlein on Saturday, August 28, we will notify you if that event is moved to Sunday, August 29, or if it will be cancelled.

————————————————————————–

The public is invited to join us for the art opening of “The Coming Soil,” an installation by Belwin 2021 Artist in Residence Tom Bierlein. Enjoy a self-guided hike at Belwin’s Creative Center in addition to the unveiling of Tom’s ephemeral work of art, which will be on permanent display.

Free parking at Shepherd of the Valley (14107 Hudson Rd S., Afton, MN 55001) and follow signs.

Dress for the elements and be prepared to hike through woodland and prairie and on steep hills. Assistance will be provided for those with special needs.

“The Coming Soil” offers space to witness the simultaneous decomposition and regeneration of a fallen tree. Three shou sugi ban cedar walls accentuate the architecture of surrounding oak trees. Within this interior, the fallen aspen tree is a new ecosystem unto itself. Insects, lichen, and fungi all take their part in returning the tree back to the soil.

This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
