Pentimento: Helen Allison Savanna, is an intimate portrait in photography and film by artist Regina M Flanagan of a rare and treasured landscape on the Anoka Sandplain north of the Twin Cities that is challenged by encroaching ex-urban development. Bearing the name of Minnesota’s “Grass Lady”, the oak savanna is home to over 240 species of plants. The Nature Conservancy’s first prescribed burn in the nation was conducted here in 1964. Flanagan’s photography and film honor ecologists, land managers, and volunteers who cherish and care for this living museum. The exhibition’s centerpiece is Landscape Stories, Helen Allison Savanna, an experimental and autobiographical documentary film featuring an original score by Alana Horton and narrated by writer and storyteller Carolyn Holbrook with Lucine Folgueras voicing Helen Lowry Allison and Jeffrey Goodson as Dr. Donald B. Lawrence.

Regina M Flanagan is an artist, writer and landscape architect living in Saint Paul, Minnesota. For over 30 years, she has photographed the Helen Allison Savanna with vintage film cameras and more recently, digital cameras. Her work has been featured in over 90 exhibitions nationally and internationally and collections including the Minnesota Historical Society. In 2014 and 2020, she was awarded Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grants.

The show Pentimento: Helen Allison Savanna will be on view at the Savanna Center at 795 Indian Trail S. Afton, MN 55001 from October 17th - November 17th. Gallery hours are Thursday, Friday, and Sunday from 12pm - 4pm.
